These vesels were conceived to replace those in a customer's much-loved Spanish set, and the Tenmoku glaze was felt to be most sympathetic to the lustre of the surviving originals.
To prevent the flat lid sagging into the dish during the second firing, I baked it separately as another, shallower and wider dish to fit over the base. It has to be unglazed on its top surface.
